I understand the need for security, but having no way to contact support and tell them my predicament is a problem. If my phone was lost, or the SIM card itself was damaged so that I couldn't just put it in a new phone, I'd be totally screwed. It took a week for me to figure this out.

The app didn't have the catch-22 of needing the authenticator to change the password (finally). I finally managed to regain access to my account by installing the steam app on my friend's phone and tapping "I forgot my password" in the app. I put my SIM card in my friend's phone temporarily (until I get a replacement) to get the SMS code.

After so many failed login attempts, they wanted me to enter the authenticator code (which I can't access), and then allowed me to use a code sent by text. Even logging in on the browser was a hassle. On the help.steampowered site, it says "for personalised assistance, please log in" and doesn't provide any way to get in contact to explain why I can't log in.Įventually, I found a web browser which remembered my password, so I could log in there, but still couldn't login to the client.

Basically, since I forgot my password, I can't remove the authenticator, and since my phone died, I can't use the authenticator to change the password. If I choose "change password" it requires me to enter the code from the steam guard authenticator. If I go up a menu level, it takes me to a page asking me "choose what to reset". I enter the code, and, without actually logging me in, it takes me to a page which lets me remove the steam guard authenticator, but requires me to enter the password. I went to "I forgot my password", but couldn't use the app or receive a text, so I finally get a confirmation code by email. I use the steam app and the steam authenticator code for security. I forgot my password, and at the same time, my phone died. I recently came across a catch-22 game breaking bug for Steam overall.
